After King Matius The First (in Russian) we have read "Milkweed" by Jerry Spinelli in English - wonderful book! My son was ~10 y.o at that point and he loved it, however it wasn't easy. Korchak is in that book too! I think your kids will like it too. Spinelli wrote a few very good books for kids, but I have read them too...
